DCAF examines strategies against THB

The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) has recently published a book that examines strategies against human trafficking.

New THB Report

The report aims to analyse how EU Member States’ legislation and policy on prostitution and other relevant areas influence the situation of trafficking in human beings (THB) for the purpose of sexual exploitation and to provide the European Commission and the EU Member States with the necessary information to improve their future proposals and policies in this area.

New ICMPD project

A new ICMPD project, focusing on improving the effectiveness of national action plans against trafficking in human beings in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, started on 1 September 2009. Enhancing the effectiveness of national action plans against human trafficking in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. TRM-EU Guidelines

The Guidelines are largely based on the TRM-SEE Guidelines, they have however been revised and extended to meet the needs of the countries participating in the TRM-EU project: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, in addition to Albania, Bulgaria, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Romania. Indicators to be applied in the context of standard operating procedures have been included (e.g. identification; first assistance and protection; long term assistance and social inclusion; return and social inclusion; criminal and civil proceedings between countries of transit, destination and origin).

Study on Post-Trafficking Experiences

The aim of this study is to provide a detailed empirical understanding of how the current transnational referral framework including identification; first assistance and protection; longer-term assistance and social inclusion; criminal and civil proceedings; and return and social inclusion is understood, perceived and experienced on the one hand by trafficked persons and on the other hand by anti-trafficking actors in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy and Portugal.

New ICMPD Project in Croatia

ICMPD held a Project Launch meeting for the Project Targeting niches in the anti-trafficking efforts: customised support for Croatia together with the Office for Human Rights of the Government of the Republic of Croatia. The Project launch took place on 19 November 2009 in Zagreb.   

The Project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Netherlands.

The Project Launch officially opened work on the project and welcomed all partners. The Head of the Office for Human Rights, Mr Luka Mađerić, the Head of Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Mr Frank van Beuningen, and Ms Elisa Trossero, ICMPD Programme Manager, addressed the attendees.

Close to 40 government officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations and diplomatic representations attended the Project Launch Meeting.

Trafficking in Human beings in Croatia

 On 26 May 2010 in Zagreb, the Croatian version of the publication “Trafficking in Human beings in Croatia: An assessment focusing on labour exploitation” was presented in front of an audience of over 50 people. ICMPD’s principles of work are...

...first, that a comprehensive human rights and victim-centred approach should underlie all anti-trafficking activities. Second, that all relevant actors including civil society should be involved in designing and implementing anti-trafficking responses both at the national as well as on the regional level - we call it multi-agency approach.  The third principle is a strong government ownership of anti-trafficking activities. Fourth, anti-trafficking activities must be sustainable.

Handbook on Anti-Trafficking Data Collection

The Handbook on Anti-Trafficking Data Collection in South-Eastern Europe: Developing Regional Criteria was developed in the framework of the Programme for the Enhancement of Anti-trafficking Responses in South-Eastern Europe - Data Collection and Information Management. It contains a list of indicators for the collection of data on trafficking in human beings - both on the victim side and on the criminal justice side. These indicators have been developed in close co-operation with governmental partners and in consultation with international experts and representatives of international and non-governmental organisations.
